Here's a post on a past Pinterest project I did with the kids a couple months back. I have tried too many Pinterest projects to count. Some haven't turned out too well, but others, like this one, turned out perfect. Crayon Art is all over Pinterest and the interent now.
I basically read this post here and started from there. I didn't take pictures through out the process unfortunantly but this is what we ended up with...

We bought 2 packages of the 64 crayons. We took out the colors we didn't want and added extra colors. Like the oranges, blues and yellows so there would be more than just a few melted crayons. Instead of using normal glue, I hot-glued all the crayons onto the top of the canvas. The kids didn't want the melted crayon to just be straight down like the ones in that blog I posted above. So we turned the hairdryer onto a higher setting to let the colors mix a little bit and go a little crazier.
It was a great project for the kids and even I loved it. I plan on making the kids each their own smaller version but with limited colors. Sophie's will only contain pinks, purples, a couple oranges and light greens. Sanders' I haven't fully decided on the colors yet, but might just go with his room theme and stick with blues, white, and oranges. Maybe add a couple glow in the dark crayons. ^_^ The options are limitless with crayon art.

I made another crayon art today for a christmas present! Here's a couple pictures on how it turned out. I went through two 96 packs of crayons as well as a 64! And I feel like there still isn't enough blue like I had wanted. It still turned out nice. I think he is gonna love it!
