This is one of my all time favorite Pinterest finds! That was my end result of the very first clothing item I sewed myself! It was so easy to make, not to mention adorable. I came across the tutorial on Pinterest and was like, " I can do that!" This Big Oak Tree's tutorial on how to make this skirt is easy to follow and understand. She does an amazing job giving enough pictures to follow and all the instructions make sewing this skirt effortless. She has a ton of other tutorials you should check out too. I love her blog!
I used a heavier, quilting weight fabric. It made the skirt fuller as it was finished. One of my favorite features of this skirt? It has pockets!!!!!!
That is one of my biggest pet peeves about skirts, no where to put my phone and lip balm. I love that you can customize where the pockets lay on your body. I am short. Even when skirts have pockets they can be too low and awkward for me. This was perfect, I got to measure from my waist down to where I wanted my pockets to lay. Not the mention I got to customize the length of the skirt also. Another short girl problem, the high waisted skirts never fit me right length wise, and there are not many petite high-waisted skirts out there.
The tutorial itself doesn't call for the cute sash to make a bow. I added that as extra. I don't have any pictures to as how I made it :( But, it's on the list of tutorials that I am putting together. Here is a similar DIY ribbon/sash tutorial if anyone really wants to know how to make the ribbon for the sash! I used just a normal cotton fabric for mine, it's not satin or silky fabric. I have to be careful what fabric (and even yarn) I choose to work with because I have a bad allergy to rayon. And it is in evvvverything. Most of the time, everything I sew with is 100% cotton just to be on the safe side.
When you get to the point where you need to "thread" the elastic through the top of the skirt, I found it easy to use a safety pin and just pull it through that way. It's difficult to pull through any other way I found. It was easy to grip the safety pin inside the seam, and pull through.

The skirt alone is cute. I made a blue one that had small white polkadots for the 4th of July, and wore a red spring cardigan with it. I didn't add a sash to the blue one. I ironed on little tag on the back of the skirt's sash, and I get comments on it all the time. People freak out when they realize that I made it. It's always nice to have random people recognize you for your work when you wear or sport it out. :) This spring and summer I plan on making a few of these for everyone. They are too adorable not to wear. Besides, it is nice to show of your own work sometimes. ^_^
